Quilts of Valor

Check sidebar to see more photos.
Presentation November 22, 2014

Saturday morning, December 22nd, a group of us from the Raincross Quilt Guild in Riverside, CA, gathered and had a lovely morning stitching labels on quilts followed by a nice lunch. Finally at 3 pm it was time for what we all had been waiting for - presenting the Quilts of Valor we had made to our 16+ honored veterans.  You could tell each and every veteran was very thankful to receive one of the quilts. Each of them told us stories of their time in service and their words just made you feel all the more thankful for them and all they gave for our country. Those that could not attend had family members there to receive their quilts.                                                                                   Melissa M

Our next Sew Day is Oct 25th.  Sharon D (Christmas scene) and Carol H (wallet) will be giving the mini workshops.  You won't want to miss these.  Held at the Goeske Center from 9 - 4PM.  Come for the workshops or come and work on your own project and enjoy the fun of getting together to sew.  More info at the meeting Tuesday. Or call Carol H or Sharon D - #s in the directory.

On The Bias

A few words from Becky Goldsmith:

Hello everyone,
I just posted a new video about How To Fold A Quilt. I've shown guilds and classes how I fold quilts for many years, but only today managed to get a video made. Click here to see it. The key is to always fold your quilts on the bias. Always. Never fold your quilts on the straight of grain because that can cause fibers to break and over time will cause creases to be permanent.
I have a very few holiday items on sale... the bat needle nannies, the black cat pin cushion kits, and the Christmas fairy pin cushion kits. I have fewer than 5 of each so if you want one, order soon. Click here. Each thing is in the right hand column... scroll down.
I realized today that the link for the new Christmas Delivery pattern was not on the website. You know, there are days when I'd like to smack myself upside the head :-). Anyway, I did put together a page with all of our Christmas patterns. Click here.
I'm going to work soon on a Christmas ornament and I'll have a free pattern for it. I think it will be an elf! Once I have it up, I'll let you all know.
And, I almost hate to mention it because I don't have many in stock, but I've recently discovered the hexagon papers from Busyfingers by Sue Daley. They are very nice indeed! The paper is slick and works really well with the Sewline Glue Pen. Click here for more info. My supplier is out of stock so we are all waiting on back orders. If you order, please be patient. Also, I'll be adding more of the Busyfingers products as I get them in.
Until then, happy stitching,
Becky

Make a Grocery Bag

c. http://www.sew4home.com/
What with Governor Brown signing the ban the plastic bag law, those bags are disappearing from grocery stores first.  Use up your stash - make your own.  Here's one site to find a pattern.

And have an old cutting mat you don't know what to use for?  Cut it up for the bottom of your bag.  You'll have to sand the edges.

QOV ALERT

Saturday, November 22nd, our next sewing day at Goeske, we will be presenting the Quilts of Valor to 18 recipients. Presentation will be at 3 PM.  The problem is we only have 14 quilts to give.  Please bring to the October meeting any QOV quilts you have, even if not finished, so we can have one for each of the veterans.  All are invited to the presentation.  Please RSVP to Christy F so that we can plan for the number coming.

More This N That

Did you know we now have over 500 Happy Bags!  Woohoo!  And we're still accepting them for next year.  The next step is to stuff them.  We're shooting for Nov 15th for stuffing. What we need now are items with which to stuff them, especially for the older kids.  What kind of stuff?

  • color pencils to draw with
  • coloring books
  • crossword puzzle books
  • journals
  • pens/pencils
  • cards
  • stationary, stuff like that
  • nothing edible.
Note: consider size of our Happy Bags when buying any of the above.  With your help, these bags will again be the hit of the Christmas party.

Also - we're nearly there to the 60 lap quilts for the Veteran's Hospital.  Turn in the one's you have and we'll get them there close to the Holidays.

Fall in Love with Quilting

from: http://bumblebutton.blogspot.com/

The theme for our October Guild retreat is Fall in Love with Quilting.  There are a couple of spots left. We will be starting a waiting list.  This second retreat of 2014 will include all meals. Thus the higher fee $65.00 plus the room.  We will again be at the Ayre's Hotel in Moreno Valley.  Call Susan M or Barbara M for more details or reserve your spot.  Lots of fun things are once again planned for this sewing weekend of October 17-19.

Color Challenged?

c. www.design-seeds.com
Are you color challenged when putting a quilt together?  I am.  I've found this great website that pulls palettes of colors from photos.  While I haven't used one yet, I get the emails from them and study the ones that they present. Then I decide if I like it or not.  I then file them (in my head) to get better on seeing what goes with what.  A mind exercise, but I think it will help me over time get better at picking colors that go together.  Here's the link.                                                       Angie
