RQG 2021 Christmas Mystery BOM Layout Options

Many thanks to guildmember Pam W. who asked me about this year's Christmas Mystery Block of the Month layout so that she could figure out her fabric placement. While I'm not going to give away the "mystery" part, I am quite proud of the blocks we're using because it allows for a lot of personal choice in how you layout the finished blocks. It should be make everyone's quilt unique!

The quilt is comprised of 11 blocks and has a finished sized (before you add any additional borders, etc) of 52" x 48". Those 11 blocks are one of four finished sizes:

Both A Blocks are 18" x 18" - these can be placed in your desired order

Block B is 12" x 30"

Block C is 10" x 48"

All of the D Blocks are 12" x 12" - these can be placed in any order

You can reorganize groups of blocks. For example, you can place 3 of the D Blocks above the A Blocks.

Or you can place 6 of the D Blocks above the A Blocks.

Block B can be ordered above one of the D Blocks - or below it. Block B and it's D Block can also be placed to the left to the grouping of 6 D Blocks and A Blocks.

Block C can be placed at the top, at the bottom, or depending on how the other groups of blocks are laid out, above a row of 4 D Blocks. The possibilities are endless!

My recommendation is to not worry about it too much right now. Once you have all of the blocks down, break out that design and start mixing around the blocks until you get a layout you like the best.

  1. Are we to make multiples of the patterns so far?

  2. Mildred - no, there are 11 unique block patterns. Blocks 1-4 are available on the BOM webpage; each month, I post a new block pattern. There are no duplicates. - Cassandra G.
