Another QOV Presentation

And a thank you note from the family:

Hi Ms. C,

I just want to get back to you so you know the wonderful impact of your organization's beautiful gift to Lewis Barrett this last Monday. Even the presentation by you created an opportunity to bring family and care staff together in a way that has renewed this wonderful man's support system to improve and increase his quality of life.

It was many years that our uncle Lewis seemed anonymous as to his military past, which has always effected his life and family. It has been in recent years that he has looked back and taken some degree of pride and acceptance and has been willing to talk about it. The quilt was almost an overwhelming experience, but he recognizes the singular significance of this recognition and he is very proud and continues to "glow".

We appreciate the work and effort, and creativity that went in to it. It was beautifully patriotic and symbolic of the honor it connotes. Please extend our appreciation to your colleagues and especially the ladies who made the quilt. The impact will continue to be present in Lewis' life and decorative in his living environment.

QOV News

RQG members Susan C (treasurer) and daughter Samantha N (Pet Donations coordinator) delivered a Quilt of Valor to William K. of Corona del Mar.  Bill is a Korean and Vietnam War veteran.  After the presentation, with the Pacific Ocean in the background, they were treated to fresh baked blueberry pastries (berries flown in for the occasion from South Dakota by Williams daughter).  Another daughter, who arranged the event, is an author and a freelance writer who writes largely about textiles for the Moda blog.  She has also written about Quilts of Valor.  Linzee Kull McCray is author of “Art Quilts of the Midwest”, and the blog “Pear the Squirrel”.  She can be found on Instagram and Twitter @seamswrite.  Susan serves the National Quilt of Valor Foundation by delivering Quilts of Valor to veterans in a 100 mile radius.

    No sewing machine? – we will have handwork to do such as labels, pinning...   You don’t sew?  That’s OK, we need happy hands to iron  and cut fabric

Magic Pillowcase

For a standard pillowcase you will need three pieces of fabric:

Main Piece:       cut 1 piece 27” x 41”

Border              cut 1 piece 10” x 41”

Accent              cut 1 piece 2½ ” x 41:

            FYI – 1 and 1/8 yards of three different (and complimentary) fabrics will JUST perfectly make three pillowcases.

1.  Lay 10” border piece face up on work surface.

2.  Lay main piece of pillowcase face up on top of the border piece – line up raw edges at top.

3.  Press the 2½ ” accent strip in half lengthwise – right side facing out.  Lay on top of main piece matching raw edges.

4.  Roll the main fabric from the bottom up to keep it out of the way.  Bring the bottom edge of the border piece to the top edge, matching and pinning all the raw edges.

5.  Stitch ½ inch seam along the pinned edge.  You now have a tube of fabric.  Turn the tube inside out             and like magic your pillowcase is almost finished with no raw edges showing.

6.  Finish the side and bottom seams with a “French Seam”.  A French Seam is done by putting the       wrong sides together and sewing a scant ¼“  seam, then putting the right sides together and           sewing a ½” seam enclosing the raw edges.

19 quilts are in the process of being finished for local Veterans. If you're a long armer, please consider quilting one for the guild. Backing and batting can be provided.

April 12th - Community Service Sew Day - location tentative - will let you know. Yard Sale meeting - bring what you no longer want that is quilty-wise.
