Reminder: Guild meeting Tuesday!

Christmas is coming! And so is Hanukkah and Kwanzaa! And so is our quilt guild meeting on a regular night this Tuesday!

Advent Quilt by RedNeedleQuilts on Etsy
Paula would very much like me to remind everyone that they are invited to bring red, yellow, brown, and black buttons as well as black thread for her to send to Yvonne in Africa. Paula will be collecting any buttons or thread donations (or money and Paula will purchase more buttons and thread) at our next meeting in December and she'll get them sent to Yvonne.

So, here's your full reminder list of things to bring:
  • Your homemade name badge
  • Your November 2019 BOM
  • Notions for Yvonne
  • Your Raincross Quilt Guild pin, which is worth an EXTRA ticket in the door prize drawing! If you don't have one, you can purchase one for $5 at the door.
  • It's our annual holiday potluck - everyone is invited to bring something to share
  • Bottled water or other non-alcoholic drink
See you all Tuesday!

P.S. The final round of Round Robin is due at the January meeting - you've got one more month!

October 2019 Meeting Review

On Tuesday we were joined by Shirley McGuire of EZ-Woolworks. Shirley is fabric dyer and a fabulous wool quilting craftsperson. She gave a great presentation on the types of wools available, how to felt wool, and how to prevent moths eating your collection! She also brought lots of beautiful patterns and kits for sale.

Shirley is joining us this Saturday for a workshop where she'll be teaching us various techniques including dyeing, wool appliqué, felting, and more. Click here for more information and contact Tami A. or Andie B. as spots are still available.

Photos from Shirley's presentation and trunk show and our regular Show and Share segment are available here.

On Moths:
Shirley uses Pro-Pest Pantry Moths and Beetle Trap which are available from Amazon, WalMart and other retailers.

When she is repurposing wool from garments that she's purchased from charity shops, Shirley disassembles the garment outside and stores it outside tightly wrapped in plastic bags, only bringing it inside to directly go into a hot washer and hot dryer to prevent any possible moth eggs that may be in the garment. Another option is to store the garment in the freezer 12-24 hours to kill off any eggs.

Block of the Month
We had a few folks bring in some recent Blocks of the Month, which was great to this! This month, since we always miss February and who doesn't love fall, we're going to make Nordic Hearts. The pattern is ready for you!

Round Robin
Our next exchange is due at the November meeting, so you better get going! Every notice how the round robins are getting bigger and bigger? Who's excited to see your top!? I can't wait!!

Community Service Updates
- Happy Bag Maven Dawn M. has asked that everyone bring in any and all happy bag goodies to the next meeting in November. She is still looking for little flashlights from Harbor Freight and adult coloring books for the older kids bags. Contact her if you have any questions.

- Gloria H. let us know that Child Help doesn't need any more quilts, quilt tops, or pillow cases for a while, but she is looking for help quilting some tops. If you have some availability, please contact her.

- We are still looking for someone to take over as Quilts of Valor Hero or Heroine. Please contact Susan C. if you have questions or are interested.

- Hospice Quilts always has quilt kits to sew together, quilt tops to be quilted, and quilt binding to do. Please contact Cassandra G. if you can help.

Upcoming Guild Meetings
Our next meeting is Tuesday November 19th and it's our annual Steal Game! You are invited to make a cool, pretty, and/or handy sewing room accessory. Check out this post for ideas. Please bring your item in a brown paper bag and feel free to embellish the bag to make it pretty - or not! All up to you.

And we are happy to announce that the December meeting will convene on its normal night, the 3rd Tuesday in December, December 17th, at the Goeske Center. We will have an our annual Holiday Potluck and a special program.

Help the Goeske Center win the Aetna Health Contest!

From Paula W.:

"Guild Members, if you were at our last meeting in September, you learned that the Goeske Center was in a contest sponsored by Aetna Health with a chance to win $20,000. The $20,000 will help accelerate the development and expansion of much needed services that keep older adults physically active, socially engaged, and living independently for the long term. As you know, Goeske doesn't charge us to use the center, so if we could cast our votes for Goeske the last two days of the contest, it would be appreciated. Each of us can vote up to four times per day.

  1. Go to VOTE.JGF4SENIORS.ORG
  2. Cast your votes using one or all of these options:
  • Email
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Twitter

You can encourage your friends and family to vote daily. Thanx!"

The November Grab Game is quickly approaching - do you know what you're going to make? Me either! So I scoured the web for you to find some FREE sewing room accessories patterns out there for you to use or be inspired by. Remember, make something awesome enough that you really want to keep it for yourself (and maybe just go ahead and make two so you can!).

I'm linking to two; the original one by Fiskars and then another by Lori Kennedy, based on the Fiskars pattern but with some modifications. Check them both out to mix and match your ideas!

October Speaker and Workshop: Shirley McGuire

Next month for the October guild meeting (Tuesday Oct 15), we'll be joined by the fabulous Shirley McGuire of EZ-WoolWorks for a trunk show and workshop. For her workshop on Saturday October 19th, Shirley will be teaching us how to make an adorable wool pin cushion, two fuzzy wool laundry balls, and a wool wrapped soap bar.

Coming up this month September 2019 at Raincross

This month we will be joined by Susan and her shop, Susan's Quilt Paradise in Beaumont! Susan will be sharing with us a trunk show of her quilts and bring part of her store to our meeting for our shopping pleasure, make sure you bring your pocketbook! We love her store and we can't wait to see what she's bringing.

For those participating in the Round Robin, our next exchange is happening this month, so now is the time to finish up the next round on the quilt top you have and make sure you bring it (or get a friend to bring it for you if you can't make it). Please contact Cassandra G. if you have any questions.

Cassandra also issued a challenge that is due this month: take inspiration from the first quilt or project (or one of your first quilts or projects) and make something new! I'm basing my inspiration on one of the first quilts I made that I call the Geisha House Quilt - I was enraptured by rail fence when I started, so I'm making another rail fence, but I'm using some unusual fabrics. Can't wait to see what inspires you!

If you still have the quilt or project that inspired your challenge, please bring it as well as your new quilt to the meeting this month. Contact Cassandra G. if you have any questions

Barbara M. will be taking reservations for the Raincross Quilt Guild Fall 2019 Retreat "Life's a Beach" for the Oceanside beach house. Please remember to bring at least $100 deposit and get ready to sew with sand between your toes!

See you in a few weeks!

Reminder: Guild meeting Tomorrow!

A few announcements...

Some of you may have heard Jeri say something about a white elephant gift exchange at the end of the June meeting. Not everyone heard, so we'll reschedule that for another time. Save your item until then!

Finally, our own Yvonne Weinstein and her husband Jeff are headed to Uganda for at least to year to become missionaries! Our help is needed for them so that they can help those in need in Uganda. Yvonne will be teaching women in Uganda how to sew, so please feel free to bring new or like-new sewing notions (no fabric) for her to take on mission:
hand sewing needles, scissors, buttons, zippers, thread, small cutting mats, cording, ziplock bags, thimbles, straight pin, lace or ribbons, felt, tape measures

Coolest thing you'll see this week: baby eagles!

This is completely non-quilt related (other than we emblazon so many quilts with their images), but humor me, you'll love this.

I saw this linked on Facebook this morning and I've had it up and running on my iPad pretty much all day. It's absolutely fascinating to watch!

Updated March BOM Measurements

Hey folks, thanks to Rose pointing out I had a few measurements incorrect in my first BOM (/sigh) so thank you for your patience while I figure this out!

The half square triangles that need to be squared up to 3 1/2" really need to start with slightly bigger squares - whoops! The instructions have been updated. Thanks!

January 2019 Meeting Review

Karen D. showing off her new hat
[Ed. note: My grandfather always used to say that Christmas lasts all year so he technically had a whole year to give out his presents. So really, I still have 10 months to get this post done, right? Forgive my tardiness...]

We had a lovely kick off for the new year and gifts just kept on coming. Angie N. had several items up for raffle grabs, including several fat 1/8's, won by Shelly N, a quilt rack, won by Andie B., and a hexie quilt, won by Karen D. Congratulations ladies and thank you Elf Angie!

As a reminder for everyone, please remember to sign into the Goeske Center at the terminal in the hallway. Our ability to use the facility for free is dependent on all of us checking in, so please don't forget!

Sara H. also donated a few items, including this lovely ponytail beanie gratefully received and modeled by Karen D.

The Quilt of Valor National Sew Day is Saturday February 2nd from 9am-3pm. Click here for more information.

Elly H. presented the last Block of Month of 2018 (available here) and invited everyone to bring in their completed quilts at the March 2019 meeting.

Elly also reminded us that it's time again for the 50% Challenge - dig out that project that you've been putting off that's halfway done and get it finished, all the way finished. Bring your completed projects to the April 2019 meeting.

Board and Chairpersonships were announced - and we're still looking for a new Nancy to take over Nancy's Nifty Notions! Please contact Jeri or Tami if you can help. We also still need a few people to help take a Mystery Box month - check out the link above and contact Jeri or Tami if you can help.

Our annual Spring Retreat to Vinya de Lestonnac is coming up May 17th-19th and there are still a few spots open. The theme this year is Sippin' and Stitchin' and the cost is $298. Contact Barbara M. to sign up.

  • Your Raincross Quilt Guild pin, which is worth an EXTRA ticket in the door prize drawing! If you don't have one, you can purchase one for $5 at the door.
  • If you were born in January, June, or September, you're invited to bring a snack to share (but it's not required!).
  • Bottled water or other non-alcoholic drink
See you all tomorrow!
